Native Oyster (Ostrea edulis) "Restoration Aquaculture" Projects
Salacia-Marine promote a "Restoration Aquaculture" model for native oyster restoration where oyster cultivation provides the necessary long-term financial sustainability to restoration activity.
This was developed during Mumbles Oyster Company Ltd.'s successful oyster ranching and restoration project on derelict beds in Swansea Bay.
Current activity includes a combined native oyster and Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) farm development with the revenue from the latter supporting restoration related cultivation.
Closing the Circle: Aquaculture Opportunities in Ports and Tidal Power Developments
This Seafish funded project examined the options for aquaculture development within the sheltered water of ports and renewable tidal power developments. This extensive piece of work presents practical approaches and tools to de-risk the development of seafarms in these areas.
As part of this work we describe the ecological and operational envelope of relevant aquaculture species and their growing methods. This formed the basis of a site scoping tool and was used to underpin a spatial modelling tool for managers.
iVMS TRIAL LYME BAY
This project successfully demonstrated the use of a catch recording App alongside inshore Vessel Monitoring Systems (iVMS) on small fishing vessels operating in an MPA.
This project utilised to high resulation spatial data from 45 vessels to map and analyse fishing effort in relation to MPA seabed habitats and reef features.
ECOSYSTEM NICHE REVIEW FOR SPECIES CAUGHT BY COMMERCIAL POTTING
This study undertaken for Natural England reviewed the ecological niche occupied by the eight key species targeted by commercial pot fisheries around the British coast.
Over exploitation or local extinction of some commercial species has been implicated in ecological perturbations such as phase shifts and trophic cascades.
Understanding of ecological niche and related interactions is required by marine fishery and conservation managers as it informs the effective management of exploited ecosystems.
